NEW DELHI: Movie star Rajnikanth on Tuseday expressed “gratitude to everyone” who condemned a TVK leader’s “slanderous remarks” claiming that the actor didn’t join politics as the ruling DMK family “threatened” him when he tried to enter politics.Thanking the film fraternity, his friends and fans, the actor said: “Time doesn’t speak, but it waits and gives the answer”.

Tamil Nadu Politics: NDA–TVK Alliance Talks Stall After Rajinikanth Controversy Triggers Backlash

“I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who condemned his slanderous remarks and raised their voices in support of me: the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Edappadi Palaniswami; Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran; Union Minister L. Murugan; Tamil Nadu Minister Raghupathy; Thol. Thirumavalavan; S.P. Velumani; my friend Annamalai; Arjunamurthy; Anbumani Ramadoss; G.K. Vasan. John Pandian; Pugazhendhi; and various other political leaders from different parties,” Rajnikanth posted on X. He further said: “I also extend my sincere thanks to Ameer, G. Dhananjayan, and my friends from the film fraternity; to Nakkeeran Gopal, Rangaraj Pandey (Chanakyaa), and members of the media; and, above all, to my fans—whom I revere as deities—for sustaining and uplifting me. Time doesn’t speak, but it waits and gives the answer.”

What was the remark?

TVK functionary Aadhav Arjuna had alleged that the DMK family threatened actor Rajinikanth when he tried to enter politics. Arjuna said he was not criticising Rajinikanth but added that Vijay had the courage to withstand such pressure.TVK organised protests at district headquarters across Tamil Nadu on Thursday, accusing the state government of failing to maintain law and order. A protest was held in Chennai, in which TVK functionaries N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and Arun Raj participated.Speaking at the protest, Arjuna said after MGR, Rajinikanth was one of the most popular actors who intended to enter politics. He said Rajinikanth wanted to enter Tamil Nadu politics and change the system. “However, the DMK family issued several threats to Rajinikanth and prevented him from entering politics. See what happened now… At the end, he went on to act in a film produced by Red Giant,” he said.Arjuna added that there was no criticism of Rajinikanth personally. However, he said Vijay had the mental strength to enter politics despite such threats. “Even when personal criticism was directed at Vijay, he did not remain silent at home in fear.”

Remark draws criticism from all quarters

Arjuna’s remarks drew criticism from several quarters, particularly from Rajinikanth’s fans. “Rajinikanth is not someone who fears threats — everyone knows that. At a time when the coronavirus was spreading severely, he stepped away from politics considering the infection risk that gatherings could pose to the public and to avoid loss of lives due to the virus,” said S Ravi, one of his fan club members in Sholingur. “Not everyone who gathers crowds can become a leader,” he added.AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palansiwami and BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday condemned remarks by TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna that actor Rajinikanth dropped his plans to launch political party due to threat from DMK. BJP has demanded an apology from Aadhav Arjuna.“Superstar Rajinikanth commands immense respect across spectrum for his abilities and talent.A TVK party functionary’s attack on such a personality is unacceptable,” EPS said in an X post. “Entering politics is one’s right, as is staying out.He (Rajinikanth) cited valid reasons for staying out. Respect that choice; politicising it is political incivility,” EPS said. EPS added that the actor earned MGR’s love and J Jayalalithaa’s respect. The statement comes four days after Aadhav made the remark that unlike Rajinikanth, Vijay withstood pressure and launched a party. In a post on X, Nagenthran said Rajinikanth, who completed more than five decades in cinema, is respected across political and social spheres and enjoys the affection of people cutting across caste, religion and language. “It is unacceptable for Mr Aadhav Arjuna to speak wrongly about such a dignified personality in public,” he said.Nagenthran recollected that Rajinikanth had received honours including Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He said the actor also enjoyed respect of national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Nagenthran urged TVK president Vijay to intervene. “The leader of that party should condemn such remarks and advise him not to engage in such actions,” he said. Last week, Aadhav Arjuna alleged that actor Rajinikanth faced pressure from DMK when he attempted to enter politics and suggested that such intimidation discouraged him from pursuing a political career. He said unlike Rajinikanth, TVK president Vijay showed the resolve to withstand such pressure. The remarks drew reactions from political leaders and sections of Rajinikanth’s supporters. His fan clubs in Madurai announced that they will contest against Aadhav in the 2026 polls to defeat him and show Rajini’s strength.

‘Finish off what’s left in Iran?’ Trump sends ‘straight’ message to ‘non-responsive’ allies

'Finish off what's left in Iran?' Trump sends 'straight' message to 'non-responsive' allies

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday escalated his rhetoric on Iran sending a “straight” message to “non-responsive” allies for refusing to support Washington’s ongoing military operations against Tehran.Sharing a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I wonder what would happen if we ‘finished off’ what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it, we don’t, be responsible for the so called ‘Straight?’ That would get some of our non-responsive ‘Allies’ in gear, and fast!!!”

,

In another post the US president said, “Remember, for all of those absolute ‘fools’ out there, Iran is considered, by everyone, to be the number one state sponsor of terror. We are rapidly putting them out of business!” His remarks come amid growing strain between the United States and its allies over the ongoing conflict with Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global energy supplies.Earlier on Tuesday, Trump had asserted that the US does not require assistance from its allies, declaring that it is “by far the most powerful country anywhere in the world and they do not need the help of anyone!” He also said several Nato allies had declined to participate in the US-led military campaign.“The United States has been informed by most of our Nato ‘allies’ that they don’t want to get involved with our Military Operation against the Terrorist Regime of Iran, in the Middle East, this, despite the fact that almost every Country strongly agreed with what we are doing, and that Iran cannot, in any way, shape, or form, be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon,” he wrote on Truth Social.“Because of the fact that we have had such military success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the Nato Countries’ assistance, we never did! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the world, we do not need the help of anyone!” he added.Trump’s comments follow his call earlier this week urging allies, Nato to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil supplies. “We strongly encourage the other nations to get involved with us and get involved quickly and with great enthusiasm,” he said at a White House event on Monday. However, key allies have shown reluctance to join any military operation. Canada said it had not been consulted on the US-Israeli strikes that triggered the conflict and would not participate in offensive action. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK was working with partners on a “viable” plan to reopen the strait but ruled out a NATO-led mission, while Germany maintained that the conflict was “not a matter for Nato.” Other countries, including Japan, Australia, Poland, Spain, Greece and Sweden, have also distanced themselves from potential involvement. European Union foreign ministers, meeting in Brussels, similarly showed “no appetite” to expand their naval operations to the Gulf. The diplomatic standoff comes as global oil prices have surged by 40–50% following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and waves of missile and drone strikes across the region, in retaliation for the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28.

Cabinet approves Rs 6,969 crore four-lane highway project in Uttar Pradesh to improve Barabanki–Bahraich connectivity

Cabinet approves Rs 6,969 crore four-lane highway project in Uttar Pradesh to improve Barabanki–Bahraich connectivity

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled National Highway-927 from Barabanki to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 6,969.04 crore, aimed at improving connectivity across key economic and logistics centres in the state, according to an official statement. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the project to be implemented on the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). The project covers a stretch of 101.515 km and includes a civil construction cost of about Rs 3,485.49 crore, along with Rs 1,574.85 crore earmarked for land acquisition.Officials said the highway development is expected to generate 36.54 lakh person-days of direct employment and 43.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, providing a boost to local economic activity. The upgradation of the Barabanki–Bahraich corridor is intended to address geometric deficiencies, sharp curves and congestion in built-up areas across both districts. Designed as an access-controlled four-lane highway with continuous service roads, the project will bypass major habitations, increase average travel speeds and reduce travel time between the two locations to around one hour.Authorities said the improved corridor would also enhance road safety, fuel efficiency and vehicle operating costs, while strengthening regional mobility and socio-economic development. The project is expected to provide seamless connectivity to economic, social and logistics nodes across Uttar Pradesh. In addition, the upgraded route will improve multi-modal integration by linking three economic nodes, two social nodes and 12 logistics nodes, besides facilitating connectivity with the Rupaidiha Land Port and nearby airports, enabling faster movement of goods and passengers.Once completed, the corridor is expected to emerge as a key cross-border trade and transit route between India and Nepal through the Nepalganj border, improving access to the Rupaidiha Land Port. The project is also likely to enhance connectivity to remote districts such as Bahraich and Shravasti, support PM GatiShakti economic and logistics initiatives, and promote agri-trade, tourism, cross-border commerce and regional investment, the statement added.

Elias Pettersson was the one who was in the spotlight as he carved his name further in the history of the NHL with a historic performance. Not only was the Vancouver Canucks in the hands of the Swedish center but it was also a milestone night in his and his team’s career where he could demonstrate his elite scoring skills.Entering the game in the middle of a dry spell, Pettersson could not have made a better reply. It was his quickness of movement, his accuracy of shooting and his confidence with the puck that led to the victory over the Florida Panthers, making the match a statement and one of the highlights of the recent NHL news roundup.

Elias Pettersson shines as Vancouver Canucks defeat Florida Panthers NHL game

Early scoring was made by Elias Pettersson, who scored on a power-play opportunity to provide the Canucks with instant momentum. It also ended a long scoring streak, which made his contribution significant in today’s NHL game. The second of his goals of the night was even more important as it was the 200th goal in his NHL career. The benchmark makes Pettersson one of a small group of active players and strengthens his position as a building block to the long-term success of Vancouver.Although Pettersson was the driving force, teammates became his support in the whole performance. Marco Rossi provided the goal and assists, and Brock Boeser provided several assists to make the offense moving. The Canucks seized their opportunities and held on to their position during critical periods of the game.On the defensive part, Vancouver held its composure and restricted the Florida Panthers. Goalkeeper Kevin Lankinen provided a stable performance, blocking some of the decisive shots to win the game. The outcome is a good recovery for the Canucks and provides a boost as the season continues. To Pettersson, though, the night will be remembered not only by the scoreline but also as a turning point in what was already a great NHL career.

Vishva Hindu Parishad: VHP hits back at NBCC, says RSS link to Nagaland church row ‘misplaced’ | India News

VHP hits back at NBCC, says RSS link to Nagaland church row ‘misplaced’

NEW DELHI: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday criticised the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) over its statement alleging an Assam Rifles raid on a church in Nagaland, saying the remarks against the RSS and VHP were “misplaced” and could create social divisions. The response comes after the NBCC condemned a late-night operation at Samziuram Baptist Church in Peren district on March 9, terming it a violation of religious sanctity and, in its statement, accusing organisations like RSS and VHP of promoting and justifying violence.VHP international president Alok Kumar said the NBCC’s reference to RSS and VHP was “completely out of context” as neither organisation had any role in the incident. He described the remarks as an attempt to “create enmity between different sections of society”.Kumar also cited local inputs, claiming that the village authorities and pastor had indicated there was no harassment or damage during the security operation. He said RSS and VHP are “law-abiding and patriotic organisations” engaged in social service, particularly among marginalised communities.Calling the NBCC statement “mischievous and dishonest”, the VHP urged restraint and cautioned against turning a security-related incident into a religious or ideological controversy.

PM Modi Calls UAE President As India Moves To Safeguard Oil Lifeline Through Hormuz, Secure Peace

In a social media post on X, PM Modi said, “Spoke with HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait, and conveyed greetings on the upcoming festival of Eid. We exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia and shared concerns over recent developments. Reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains our foremost priority.”“We agreed that sustained diplomatic engagement remains essential for regional peace and stability. I thanked him for continued support for the safety and wellbeing of the Indian community in Kuwait,” he added. On Monday, PM Modi also spoke to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and reiterated India’s strong condemnation of all attacks on the Gulf country that have resulted in the loss of innocent lives and damage to civilian infrastructure. The talks took place amidst reports of fresh attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure by Iranian drones. The PM said in a post on X that the leaders agreed on the importance of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.“We will continue to work together for the early restoration of peace, security, and stability in the region,” said PM Modi, while also conveying Eid greetings to the president. India has a critical energy partnership with the UAE, which, according to the Indian government, is the 4th largest source of crude and the 2nd largest source of LNG and LPG for India.Apart from the safety and security of the Indian diaspora, India’s immediate concern about the conflict is the likely impact on its LPG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively blockaded by Iran.As the government said earlier this week, India has chosen dialogue and diplomacy with Tehran to address its concerns instead of entertaining any thought about joining a US-led military coalition to secure the key waterway. The proposal for sending warships has found few takers among the US’ NATO allies in any case.
