Alana King steers Australia to series-clinching win over West Indies in 2nd Women’s T20I

Australia Women produced a composed all-round performance to secure a 17-run victory over West Indies Women in the second T20I at Arnos Vale Ground, taking control of the series in what turned out to be a closely fought contest. Despite a spirited chase led by Hayley Matthews, the hosts fell short as Australia’s bowlers held their nerve in the crucial phases.

Australia post a competitive total after strong middle-order effort

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Australia Women put up a solid total of 164/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was built around impactful contributions from multiple batters, with Georgia Voll providing early momentum through a brisk 39 off 23 balls, striking six boundaries and a six.

Beth Mooney had a relatively quiet outing, managing 17 off 20 deliveries, but Phoebe Litchfield steadied the innings with a fluent 35 off 29 balls. The backbone of Australia’s innings, however, came from the experienced Ellyse Perry, who played a commanding knock of 42 off just 28 deliveries, laced with six boundaries.

Towards the end, Georgia Wareham and Nicola Carey chipped in with quick cameos to push the total beyond the 160-mark, giving Australia a strong platform to defend.

For West Indies Women, the bowling effort was disciplined but lacked breakthroughs at regular intervals. Deandra Dottin, Matthews, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack, and Jahzara Claxton picked up one wicket each, but none were able to significantly halt Australia’s scoring momentum.

Hayley Matthews leads the fightback in chase

In response, West Indies Women finished at 147/4, falling 17 runs short despite a promising start and a determined middle-order effort. Qiana Joseph began positively but was dismissed early after scoring 11. Matthews once again showcased her class with a superb knock of 56 off 41 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes. She anchored the innings and kept the required run rate within reach for a major part of the chase.

Stafanie Taylor supported her with a steady 22 off 27 balls, while Dottin injected late hope with an aggressive 39 off 28 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes. However, the lack of acceleration in the middle overs and the inability to find boundaries consistently towards the end proved costly.

Alana King shines as Australia defend successfully

Australia’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance, with Alana King emerging as the standout performer. She claimed two crucial wickets while conceding just 25 runs in her four overs, effectively breaking partnerships and slowing the scoring rate.

Georgia Wareham also made an impact with the ball, picking up one wicket and maintaining tight lines, conceding only 16 runs in her spell. The rest of the bowling attack, including Kim Garth and Darcie Brown, played their roles in containing the opposition despite going wicketless. Eventually, Aussies ended up winning the contest by 17 runs and taking a 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.

NEW DELHI: The crowd erupted in loud cheers the moment Rohit Sharma took the mic, with the noise reaching a crescendo when he declared, ‘iss baar No. 6 aapke paas’.Mumbai Indians are five-time Indian Premier League champions, having lifted the trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, Mumbai Indians have not won the title in the last five years. Notably, all five championships came under Rohit’s leadership.

Iss baar Number 6 aapke paas laakar rakhein,” Rohit said. Are Mumbai Indians the greatest IPL team?Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan believes Mumbai Indians hold a slight edge over Chennai Super Kings as the ‘greatest team in IPL history’, even though both franchises have won the same number of titles.Pathan argued that MI’s impact on Indian cricket has been more significant, highlighting the number of top-quality players the franchise has produced for the national team.“CSK started winning the IPL title from 2010 onwards. They won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011 and were the first team to do so. But when Mumbai Indians started winning from 2013, they kept winning after every alternate year. Then they won the IPL trophy back-to-back in 2019 and 2020.”“What I like about Mumbai is their contribution to Indian cricket. The number of match winners they have produced for the Indian team is absolutely tremendous. How do you achieve that? First, you make your franchise big. Second, you deliver results with the team you have. Even now, Mumbai Indians had a great squad last season that could have easily won the trophy, but they couldn’t for different reasons.”While MI can take credit for identifying and nurturing talents like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, CSK can point to their role in developing players such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay and Ruturaj Gaikwad.“CSK don’t have four Indian captains, Mumbai Indians do. In that respect, assembling a team and contributing to a bigger cause, I think Mumbai Indians are the greatest IPL team. I know CSK will always say they are also the greatest, having won five trophies too. There is no doubt. There will always be a debate and it is a fair debate. But I think Mumbai Indians take the edge because they have given so many wonderful cricketers and young talents to Indian cricket,” Pathan concluded.

Diesel price: Bulk diesel price hike rolled back for Gujarat fishermen, will be treated as special exception

Diesel price: Bulk diesel price hike rolled back for Gujarat fishermen, will be treated as special exception

Fishermen in Gujarat will continue to receive diesel at subsidised rates after the Centre decided to roll back a recent steep increase in bulk fuel prices, following a request from the state government. The relief comes after oil companies raised the price of bulk diesel by Rs 22.43 per litre for industrial users earlier in the week, in response to rising global crude prices amid the ongoing supply disruption due to the Middle East war. The hike had also been extended to diesel supplied to fishing boats, triggering concern among the state’s fishing community. Fisheries minister Jitu Vaghani said that the Gujarat government intervened, urging the Centre to treat fishermen as retail consumers and provide a “special exception” to shield them from the increase. After the price hikes were announced, many manufactureres and transporters across the state were left struggling amid already existing pressures from inflaction and energy market volatility.“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre has accepted this reasonable representation of the fishermen of Gujarat. The Centre has instructed Bharat Petroleum to withdraw the increase of Rs 22.43 in the price of diesel used in fishermen’s boats,” an official release said.It added that “a representation was made to Vaghani, MLAs, local leaders and various fisheries organisations. Considering the seriousness of the matter, Vaghani, under the guidance of the chief minister, made a representation to the Centre to intervene in the matter.” “So, the fishermen of the state will now receive diesel at the previously decided concessional rate,” it added. The state had earlier entered into an agreement with Bharat Petroleum to supply diesel to fishermen at discounted prices. However, the recent revision had pushed up costs until the rollback was approved. The broader price revision comes at a time when global oil markets have been volatile. Bulk diesel prices in Delhi, for instance, were raised from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 109.59, even as retail fuel prices remained unchanged. Petrol in the national capital continues to be priced at Rs 94.77 per litre, while regular diesel remains at Rs 87.67.Officials have maintained that there has been no increase in fuel prices for the general public. “Some increase is reported in the premium category which hardly makes up for 2%-4% of the entire petrol (sold in the country),” said Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas. “There is no increase in price for the common man.”She added that fuel prices are determined by oil marketing companies as petrol and diesel have been deregulated, and the government does not directly set rates.Retail prices have been frozen since April 2022, with companies absorbing fluctuations in global crude prices. The government has indicated it will continue this approach unless there is a significant and sustained spike in international oil rates.India relies on imports for 88% of its crude oil needs, with a large share transported through the Strait of Hormuz. Ongoing tensions in the region have disrupted supplies and pushed global crude prices higher, touching $119 per barrel before easing to around $108.While bulk fuel costs have risen in line with global trends, the exemption for Gujarat’s fishermen ensures they will not be impacted by the latest hike.

Ex-RCB batter exposes Gujarat Titans’ weakness ahead of IPL 2026

Former RCB coach Mohammad Kaif pointed out the weaknesses in the Gujarat Titans’ bowling deck. He noted that Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have all been hit in the death overs, while Kagiso Rabada’s form has dipped in recent times.

The Titans entered the 2026 mini-auction with 20 players retained from the previous season. They only managed to pick four pacers in the side. Jason Holder, Ashok Sharma, Luke Wood, and Prithvi Raj Yarra.

The Gujarat Titans won the IPL in their debut season of 2022 and then finished as the runners-up in 2023. However, after back-to-back success, the Titans could not make a top-two finish in the next two seasons.

Mohammad Kaif exposes the Gujarat Titans’ deficit of death overs specialists

Former Indian player Mohammad Kaif believes that the Gujarat Titans’ death bowling issues will cost them in the upcoming season of the IPL, much like they did the last time in IPL 2025. He pointed out that Mohammed Siraj was hit by a death last time in the IPL.

“Siraj is a new-ball bowler. Prasidh Krishna bowls in the middle. His strength is hit-the-deck bowling. The Ahmedabad ground is big. The square boundaries are big. He bowls hard lengths in the middle. So I can understand what his role is,” the former Indian batter responded.

Last time Prasidh Krishna operated in the middle phase and then bowled an over or two in the death. Kagiso Rabada has not been handy, and his spot in the XI might also not be a direct pick, as Holder and Phillips both seem crucial for team dynamics.

“Prasidh Krishna has shown improvement in his slower balls as well. The ball dips, and he picks up wickets, but they don’t have death bowling. Kagiso Rabada is getting hit. Siraj also got hit. I am talking about the final three or four matches last year. Prasidh Krishna got hit,” he added.

They always win the auction – Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif, in the same discussion video, highlighted that despite assembling a stunning side, the Gujarat Titans could not finish in the top two in IPL 2025.

“This team has two backups for every player. They always win the auction. Compared to other teams, their auction planning is fantastic. However, last year, they had won nine of the first 12 matches, and were sitting on top, but they couldn’t come in the top two after that. They had to play the Eliminator. They lost their last three matches consecutively,” he said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator pointed out that Shubman Gill’s side’s bowling got exposed under pressure towards the business end. Teams like LSG, CSK, and MI scored 225+ runs against them in the last three games, as they lost the back-end games, eventually being ruled out of the Eliminator.

“Bowling was their strength at the start, but when the main tournament came, when they had to win one match to qualify for the top two, they lost all three. So the bowling also got exposed under pressure,” Kaif observed.

How will the Gujarat Titans’ Playing 12 look in IPL 2026?

Gujarat Titans will not have much dilemma with their top three cricketers. They will have Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, the two Indian batters, opening for them. The world T20 veteran Jos Buttler has featured at no. 3 for the Titans.

They might be sorting in New Zealand middle-order batter Glenn Phillips in the middle order, who might come in handy with the ball and on the field as well. Phillips will be followed by a middle order, which doesn’t seem the strongest of the lot.

Washington Sundar and Shahrukh Khan can be next in the batting order, with Jason Holder in at no. 7 for the Gujarat Titans. However, this simply means that Kagiso Rabada would not feature in the playing XI.

The bowling deck would comprise the final overseas pick, Rashid Khan, pacers Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishan, and spinner R Sai Kishore. After completing the XI, Nishant Sindhu and Rahul Tewatiya remain as the options for an Impact player.

Watch: Missile strike rocks Israel’s ‘Little India’ as Iran attack injures over 40; videos show chaos

Iranian missile strikes on southern Israel have left scenes of chaos in Dimona a town known as “Little India” for its large Indian-origin population with videos circulating online showing the moment a ballistic missile tore through residential areas. At least 47 people were injured in Dimona after a missile carrying a heavy warhead struck a community building, damaging nearby homes and sparking panic among residents. Among the wounded was a 12-year-old boy in serious condition after being hit by shrapnel, while dozens of others suffered minor injuries or trauma while rushing to shelters. Emergency responders described “extensive damage and chaos”, with footage showing buildings ablaze and debris scattered across streets.

Trump gives Iran 48-hour ultimatum to open Strait of Hormuz — Follow live updatesDimona, home to Israel’s nuclear research facility, has long been nicknamed “Little India” due to its strong Indian-Jewish community, many of whom trace their roots to Maharashtra, as per a report by PTI. The town’s streets are lined with Indian shops, Marathi is widely spoken, and cultural ties with India remain deeply embedded. Hours later, a second missile struck the nearby city of Arad, compounding the damage. Across both cities, more than 100 people were injured, including children, with several in serious condition. Israeli authorities said air defence systems attempted to intercept the missiles but failed, resulting in direct hits that caused widespread destruction. The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the interception failure, saying the incident “will be investigated”. Officials confirmed that interceptors were deployed but did not successfully neutralise the incoming threats.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as a “very difficult evening”, saying he had spoken to Arad’s mayor and ordered full government support for those affected. “We are determined to continue to strike our enemies on all fronts,” he said, while urging civilians to follow safety instructions.Israel’s Foreign Ministry accused Iran of deliberately targeting civilians, calling the strikes “a blatant war crime” and “pure terrorism”. Opposition leaders, including former prime ministers, also expressed solidarity with residents, describing the attacks as a “great disaster”.Iran, however, said the strike on Dimona was a response to an earlier attack on its Natanz nuclear facility, although Israel denied involvement in that incident. The UN’s nuclear watchdog confirmed it had no indication of damage to Israel’s nuclear site but called for “maximum military restraint” to avoid further escalation.
