E-comm hiring up 35% in 2 yrs; AI, ops lead: Report

E-comm hiring up 35% in 2 yrs; AI, ops lead: Report

BENGALURU: India’s e-commerce and quick commerce sector is hiring again, but the playbook has changed. Talent demand rose 35% between 2023 and 2025 to nearly 98,750 roles, even as companies shifted from expansion-led hiring to building technology capability and execution strength, according to a CIEL HR report. The sharpest shift is in technology hiring. Demand for engineering roles has expanded more than threefold over the past two years, with companies prioritising solution architects, and AI and machine learning specialists. These roles are linked to investments in recommendation engines, chatbots, warehouse automation, and payments systems , the report said. Nearly half of incremental hiring is now concentrated in technology, product and operations, signalling a structural move away from customer acquisition-led hiring towards platform capability and fulfilment-led workforce design. Operational hiring remains critical as quick commerce expands into smaller cities. Demand in supply chain and fulfilment roles has risen 25%, with warehouse managers, fulfilment planners, city operations leads and inventory controllers forming the backbone of expansion. These roles are especially concentrated in tier-2 and tier-3 markets.

.

“India’s digital commerce sector is entering a new workforce phase where engineering depth, operational agility and execution precision are becoming the strongest indicators of business competitiveness,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, managing director and CEO, CIEL HR. “Organisations are designing talent models that combine specialised technology capability with highly responsive frontline execution. At the frontline, gig work continues to anchor the sector. India’s gig workforce has crossed 12 million, with more than half engaged in delivery, dark-store fulfilment and hyperlocal logistics. The shift is also reflected in pay. AI and machine learning specialists are earning 30%-40% more than conventional tech roles.

India backs WTO reset with core focus intact

India backs WTO reset with core focus intact

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday backed reforming the World Trade Organisation but underlined the need to retain the core focus on poor and developing countries and a consensus-driven decision-making process.“The necessary reform of WTO should be carried out through a transparent, inclusive and member-driven process, keeping development at its core, upholding the foundational principles and objectives of the organisation, mainly non-discrimination, consensus-based decision making and equity. Special and differential treatment (S&DT) should be precise, effective and operational,” commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal said in his intervention at the ministerial meeting that kicked off on Thursday. While calling for past mandates given by members to be delivered, Goyal highlighted the need to get the dispute settlement mechanism going again. The US has blocked appointments to the appellate body, holding up the entire process of dispute resolution He also flagged his concern over the failure of the WTO membership to address concerns of poor countries that grow and export cotton, or India’s concerns over public stockholding, an issue that has been pending for 12 years now with ministers kicking the can down the road every time they meet. “…we must deliver on them on priority,” Goyal said at the meeting in Cameroon.India also thumbed down China’s push for an investment facilitation framework but did not make an explicit mention. Instead, Goyal said the incorporation of plurilateral outcomes into the WTO framework should be based on consensus and not impair existing rights of non-parties or cast additional obligations on them. A plurilateral agreement, which according to India needs to be cleared through consensus, means a group of countries can finalise a pact on an issue such as IT goods.Further, he suggested that India is not keen on continuing the customs waiver for e-commerce.

The victim, Tuvankumar Yadav, hailed from Bihar. He lived in Mumbai for the past 10 years and worked as a delivery boy with a food delivery app for half of that period. On Wednesday, he was riding his electric two-wheeler for a delivery on New Link Road at Kandivli (W). Without looking in the mirror, the driver opened the right side door. The door hit Yadav who was coming up on his scooter. As a result, he fell on the road. A tanker coming up from behind mowed him down. Yadav was still lying injured on the road when someone informed his brother, over phone, and the latter rushed to check on him. I eat non-veg even on Ugadi and Shivaratri: CM Siddaramaiah | Bengaluru News

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sparked debate by stating he eats non-vegetarian food on festival days like Ugadi and Maha Shivaratri, asserting personal belief over ritual

BENGALURU: Chief minister Siddaramaiah Wednesday stirred fresh debate over faith and food habits by revealing he eats non-vegetarian food even on festival days such as Ugadi and Maha Shivaratri. The remark came during his reply to the budget, after opposition members teased him about his “changed” stance on auspicious timings while presenting this year’s budget. Although he has rarely entertained superstition, Siddaramaiah presented his 17th budget 15 minutes before rahu kala — widely regarded as inauspicious. Responding to the jibe, Siddaramaiah said, “Each person has his or her own belief. What is wrong with eating non-vegetarian food on festival days? While I believe there is a god, it does not mean that I must go only to the temple to find him. God is everywhere and omnipresent.” He then quoted 12th-century social reformer Basavanna, reciting a vachana that likens the human body to a temple, with the mind as the place where god resides. Siddaramaiah’s remarks revived memories of past controversies over his personal beliefs and food choices. During his earlier tenure between 2013 and 2018, and later as opposition leader, he faced criticism after a video surfaced allegedly showing him eating meat before visiting a temple. While he denied eating meat on that occasion, he admitted he was a non-vegetarian. As for beginning his budget speech just ahead of rahu kala, he said: “Considering we, Congress party and I, believe in democracy, I listened to my family (wife) and officials who urged me to start the speech before the beginning of the inauspicious hour.” He said in the past he had presented budgets during inauspicious hours and did not believe in rahu kala, Yamaganda or similar concepts, making this year’s adjustment a rare exception.

Siddaramaiah also added a lighter moment to his reply on the budget, revealing that he was wearing a Rs 13,000 silk shawl gifted by his deputy DK Shivakumar. “It is costly, but then the old towels worn on the side fall when I bend. To avoid this, I switched to wearing it around my neck,” he said, drawing laughter in the House. He also noted that Shivakumar himself prefers wearing woollen stoles, turning what began as a routine budget reply into a moment of humour on the assembly floor.

RCB legend warns MI over their veteran pacer ahead of IPL 2026

Former South Africa captain, and a legendary batter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) warned the Mumbai Indians (MI) about one of their experienced pacers. Ahead of the IPL 2026, the five-time league winners might be confident enough to claim their sixth title, but Villiers gave them a reality check with his key assessments on their bowling attack.

The bowling attack of the former champions is looking strong enough for another title shot as Jasprit Bumrah is in form, and the team will expect to see the pace spearhead to carry the same rhythm that he exhibited in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Trent Boult is set to pair up with Jasprit Bumrah in IPL 2026

For the pace bowling duties, Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya could trust Bumrah and New Zealand star Trent Boult. Boult is a proven bowler across all formats, but can he deliver the best in the 2026 campaign for the Mumbai Indians? AB de Villiers has a plethora of doubts.

According to Villiers’ observation, the New Zealand pacer has way past his prime and lost the edge. The former batter compared Boult’s decreasing pace with RCB pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. For Villiers, Boult has lost a yard like the Indian pacer.

The one worry for me is Trent Boult: AB de Villiers

“The one worry for me is Trent Boult. It’s similar to a Bhuvi situation, where he has lost a yard. He is not as spicy as he was from 2018 to 2020. He seems to be more expensive over the last while that I have watched him play. MI probably feels they have a lot of insurance there, but maybe it’s a false sense of security. It could be an area some of the opposition batters will target,” the former international cricketer explained on his YouTube channel.

The Kiwi pacer did a decent job for MI in IPL 2025

The Kiwi pacer made a comeback in the team last season to pair up with Jasprit Bumrah. Boult was a bit expensive, especially during the initial stage of the IPL 2025. In the latter part of the session, as the matches progressed, the left-handed pacer proved effective in taking wickets.

In 16 matches for the Mumbai Indians, the seamer took 22 wickets, including a best of 4/22, for an economy rate of 8.96. The franchise bought Trent Boult for INR 12.50 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

For MI Cape Town, Trent Boult proved expensive in the previous season as he conceded runs at an economy rate of 9.82, which was not satisfying for a bowler of his calibre. In the 10 SA20 2025-26; campaign, he managed to take only 8 wickets, while in the previous season of the tournament, Boult snatched 11 wickets in 11 games, and the economy rate was less than seven.

So, what AB de Villiers observed and explained, has a valid ground to talk about. Mumbai Indians team management might have also noticed the recent below-par stats of the bowler.

NEW DELHI: The road to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia was supposed to be the moment Indian women’s football would finally step out of the shadows and make the much-anticipated leap. With six World Cup spots on the line, the Blue Tigresses felt the pulse of history beneath their studs. Instead, the campaign, with three defeats in three games, dissolved into what many may describe as a bumbling sequence of administrative gambles and subsequent on-field heartbreak, leaving the players to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream.Sangita Basfore, a midfield general who witnessed the nightmare unfold up close while playing all three matches in the tournament earlier this month, tries to hide the profound collective sorrow behind the rhetoric of professional growth.

EXCLUSIVE: Where did things go wrong for India in Women’s Asia Cup? Aditi Chauhan decodes

“None of us are satisfied with our performance because the result didn’t go our way,” she told TimesofIndia.com during an exclusive conversation. “The coach had high expectations from me. But personally, I feel I couldn’t perform at my best or support the team the way I should have… But playing on such a big stage against top players. That itself was a big achievement for us.”

An approach that left more questions than answers

The turbulence started long before the opening whistle in Perth. In a move that left many observers baffled, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) opted for a foreigner-is-better approach just weeks before the tournament. They demoted domestic coach Crispin Chettri, the man who had orchestrated a famous qualification victory over Thailand, to an assistant role. In his place came Amelia Valverde, a Costa Rican tactician with two World Cup qualifications on her resume, signed to a frantic, short-term two-month contract. The preparation looked seamless on paper as the team spent nearly 40 days in Antalya, Turkey, testing themselves against European clubs.

“Honestly, our preparation was very good,” Basfore recalled. “We played against teams from Ukraine and Russia… Champions League-level club teams. We won almost every match.” But as the team moved from the Mediterranean breeze of Turkey to the high-stakes pressure of Australia, the cracks began to show.“As the matches got closer, we were getting more excited but also a bit nervous. Until we played the first match, we couldn’t really judge how our performance would be. No matter how much you prepare, on such a big stage, there’s always that uncertainty,” the 29-year-old admitted. “After the first match, we became more serious. We still regret that we feel like the World Cup opportunity slipped away from us.”

A coaching carousel

With the AIFF not intending to extend Valverde’s contract, it suggests that their stop-gap solution to success has gone down the drain.According to multiple reports, her short-lived tenure had tactical volatility, with the AIFF Technical Committee recently describing her term as “disappointing”. She cycled through three different formations in three group games. The on-field results were devastating, with three losses, zero points, and a scarring 11-0 drubbing at the hands of eventual champions Japan.

Basfore feels there was too little time for Valverde. “She is a very good coach. If she had more time with us, she could’ve understood us even better,” the West Bengal-born midfielder told this website. “But she still tried and spoke to everyone, motivated us both on and off the field. There wasn’t really a problem.”Despite the 11-0 scoreline against Japan, Basfore refuses to believe the gap is insurmountable for Indian football. Looking at their other opponents, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei, she insists the difference wasn’t quality, but execution and perhaps a bit of luck. “If you look at teams like Vietnam or Chinese Taipei, there isn’t a huge difference. We could have done better. We fought hard as a team. We were also unlucky; many of our shots hit the post,” she admitted.“If we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches, it would have helped.”

What is ahead?

The road to redemption now leads to Nairobi. In April 2026, the Blue Tigresses will participate in the FIFA Series, facing hosts Kenya at the Nyayo National Stadium. It is a chance to reset against varied opposition, including Malawi and the very Australian side that hosted their recent continental misery.

If we had a longer camp and played more friendly matches, it would have helped.

Sangita Basfore, India women’s national team midfielder

However, there is optimism, tempered by a plea for structural change. For Basfore, the nightmare in Australia wasn’t just about tactical formations or foreign versus domestic coaches; it was about the daily reality of the Indian game. ALSO READ: ‘You can’t have random plans’: Aditi Chauhan on where it went wrong for India at AFC Women’s Asia Cup“Improving grassroots development and extending the women’s league duration would help a lot,” she asserted.“When players go back home, they don’t always get proper training or facilities. If the league runs longer, players will improve, and the national team will perform better.”
