Fewer flights, no fare caps: Domestic airfares set to soar

NEW DELHI: Be prepared for expensive domestic flights this summer, just like international flights have been since the outbreak of Iran war. The summer schedule is likely to see about 3,000 weekly fewer domestic flights – a 12% decline – over last summer’s 25,610. With the fare caps gone and the number of flights reduced, cost of travel is set to soar under the summer schedule that is effective from March 29.“A significant hike in aviation turbine fuel prices is expected from April 1. That will mean a serious increase in operating costs and fares. Though Air India group, IndiGo and Akasa have either hiked or levied, that will mean nothing compared to the ATF hike being anticipated. At those levels, only a handful of either profitable (read IndiGo) or backed by cash-rich groups (read Tata for Air India) will be able to operate flights as per demand. Some weak players simply won’t have funds to fill up their planes and will struggle to remain afloat,” said an industry insider.Airlines know hiking fares beyond a point will mean hurting demand, which will then mean operating fewer flights. The approved schedule anyway is the maximum number of flights that an airline can operate. The number that is actually does depends on supply, demand and operating costs, among other things.

RCB’s big changes ahead of IPL: New rules, tribute & squad update

“Due to last year’s tragic incident on June 4 last year, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026 (in Bengaluru). The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19 as a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025. However, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a grand entertainment function at the closing of the IPL, on the day of the final (May 31),” Saikia told to TOI. Last year, a grand opening ceremony was held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, featuring performances by superstar Shah Rukh Khan, singers Shreya Ghoshal and Karan Aujla, along with a dance performance by actress Disha Patani. In 2019, following the Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of around 40 CRPF personnel, the BCCI then run by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had also scrapped the opening ceremony of IPL 12 and donated the allocated funds to the families of the victims. Saikia had earlier stated that the BCCI will announce the schedule for the remaining matches of the IPL “very soon.”The IPL 2026 season will begin on March 28, with Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Shubman Gill takes cheeky dig at journalist, names opening partner for IPL 2026

Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill makes a huge announcement ahead of the IPL 2026 season. In a press conference on March 26, the top order batter confirmed the opening combination of the team for the upcoming season.

Last season, GT looked impressive because of the batting performances by Sai Sudharsan. Will GT continue trusting in the batter for an opening slot for the IPL 2026? The question was directly asked to the Gujarat captain Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill confirms his opening partner ahead of IPL 2026

Like the question, the answer also came in a direct, fluent way. Gill said that it will be wrong to demote a batter who won the Orange Cap in the previous IPL season.

So, the Gujarat Titans are likely to keep the opening pair of Gill and Sudharshan, which is commonly known as ‘Sai-Su’, in the upcoming Indian Premier League campaign. In the previous edition, Sudharshan registered a staggering amount of 759 runs in 15 matches, averaging 54.21 to become the best batter of IPL 2025.

Sai Sudharsan ruled IPL 2025 with his individual batting skills

In the previous season, both Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan were firing all cylinders with their blades. Whilst Sudharshan registered 759 runs to become the top run scorer of the tournament, Gill finished in fourth place on the top run-scoring batters list with 650 runs in 15 matches for an average of 50.00. Gill was only behind Sudharshan, Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians) who got 717 runs, and Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) who scored 657 runs in the campaign.

With the top-performing batters, the Gujarat Titans secured their place in the play-offs, but failed to reach the finals.

The pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan produced multiple memorable partnerships for the Gujarat Titans

Gill and Sudharshan both share a strong bond on the pitch. They have founded some of the most elusive partnerships for the Gujarat Titans. In 2024, the pair of ‘Sai-Su’ registered a formidable partnership of 210 against the Chennai Super Kings, which is the highest partnership for the Gujarat Titans.

On May 18, 2025, they registered a 205-run partnership against the Delhi Capitals, which is the second-highest for the team. In the same season, they stitched 100-plus runs partnerships against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as well.

So, for obvious reasons, there is no need for the team management to break the partnership that has done well so far in the past. With the left-hand and right-handed combination, the opposing bowlers might have found it difficult to break the pair.

Unlike relying on fancy shots, both of them are known for technical batting skills. They will try to bring on another stellar season, as they will aim to make their way into the T20I set-up.

Deutsche Bank GCC fuels AI push with incubator

Deutsche Bank GCC fuels AI push with incubator

MUMBAI: The Indian Global Capability Center (GCC) of Deutsche Bank is betting on a startup-style approach to accelerate AI adoption, with its in-house incubator at Deutsche India Pvt Ltd (DIPL) drawing 100 ideas within its first 100 days, reflecting what its leadership describes as an unusually high openness to technological change among the local workforce.Stefan Schaffer, MD & CEO of DIPL, said the India-based GCC has seen employees embrace AI-led transformation with far less resistance than in many mature markets. He attributed this to a broader cultural association of change with progress, shaped by rapid digital adoption in India, including platforms such as UPI. He said that this adaptability is proving valuable for a 150-year-old institution navigating structural shifts.DIPL, which employs over 20,000 people across Pune, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Mumbai, is driving its AI push through a programme called “AI Forward”, which combines top-down investment with bottom-up participation. A key pillar is the incubator, modelled on startup ecosystems, where employees can pitch ideas directly to leadership and refine them with expert input. Complementing this is a large-scale training effort that has already covered 20,000 employees on large language models and responsible AI usage, alongside a “Catalyst” initiative that embeds specialists within teams to prototype solutions in live environments. The shift towards AI is part of a broader strategic reset at Deutsche Bank’s technology operations. Having already rebalanced its workforce mix from 30% internal staff to 70%, and increased the share of engineers to 70%, the bank is now targeting deeper ownership from its GCCs. Under a new “70-50-30” framework, it aims to locate 50% of portfolio owners and 30% of senior leadership roles within its technology centres, including India, to ensure end-to-end accountability.Schaffer said that while AI is becoming embedded in mainstream operations, core enterprise platforms will remain critical. Instead of replacing foundational systems, AI is expected to transform the “last mile” of configuration, enabling faster and more flexible development while retaining the structural integrity required in a regulated banking environment.
