Tamil Nadu polls: 85% of 2021 promises met, 2026 manifesto will be gamechanger, says DMK MLA Ezhilan | Chennai News

CHENNAI: DMK MLA Ezhilan Naganathan said 85% of the party’s promises made in 2021 poll manifesto have been fulfilled by the govt that the manifesto to be released for upcoming election would reshape Tamil Nadu’s socio-economic landscape. He told reporter in the city on Friday that there were high expectations for DMK’s manifesto for the elections. He said the manifesto would fulfill expectations and would serve as a boost to the electoral prospects of the ruling party. He also took a dig at AIADMK’s poll manifesto, alleging that the opposition party had fulfilled less than 33% of the promises they had give during their regime. On a few allies expressing displeasure over allocation of seats and contesting under DMK’s symbol, Ezhilan said differences during seat-sharing talks were natural. “Discussions and differences of opinion during alliance negotiations are the nature of democracy,” he said, adding that success lies in listening to all partners and arriving at a consensus.Dismissing opposition campaign, he said, “Stories of double engine and triple engine will not work here. In Tamil Nadu, it has always been the Dravidian engine.” He reiterated that the election is for state rights and the self-respect of Tamils, and described it as a battle against communal and divisive forces.Citing welfare measures, including monthly assistance to about 1.31 crore women, Pongal cash support, and the ‘Vidiyal Payanam’ scheme, Ezhilan said DMK’s initiatives have strengthened livelihoods and will aid the bid to secure a massive victory in more than 200 constituencies.

Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma share adorable flying kiss moment after RCB vs SRH clash

Royal Challenger Bengaluru (RCB) won the IPL 2026 opener in style against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Virat Kohli again came under the spotlight as he took the team safely over the finish line. Kohli remained not out on the crease for 69 runs to confirm the victory for the team, which is playing as the defending champions for the first time in the history of the league.

After the match, Virat Kohli offered his wife Anuskha Sharma a flying kiss. While Kohli was celebrating the moment, Anuskha was clapping for his husband from the stands of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The adorable moment between Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma did not escape the ever-curious eyes of the cricket fans on social media platforms.

Watch the Adorable moment between Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma here:

Quick-fire knocks from Padikkal and Patidar dismantled the SRH bowling attack

The match was truly entertaining for the fans as both of the power-palaced sides scored over 200 runs in their respective batting phases. Using Devdutt Padikkal as an impact batter was probably the master stroke of the match from the RCB team management. He came and simply took off the required run rate pressure from the team.

Padikkal, the batter who scored tons of runs in the recent past in domestic cricket, smashed 61 runs, facing only 26 balls. The number three batter of RCB’s line-up smashed a total of eleven boundaries, including seven 4s and four 6s, which took his strike rate to 234.62. The skipper, Rajat Patidar, under whose captaincy Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL trophy in the last season, scored 31 runs with a strike rate of 258.33.

Virat Kohli remained firm on the deck like an experienced navigator

Batters like Padikkal and Patidar got the free licence to go for every ball, because Virat Kohli was standing on one end of the crease, from the beginning. When SRH pacer Jaydev Unadkat took Phil Salt’s wicket early in the second innings, RCB was on only 9 runs. After that, when Padikkal took the burden on his shoulder, Kohli remained calm on the deck. Steadily, the Indian batting maestro increased his run rate, and when the match reached its final stage, Virat was 69 not out off 38 deliveries, strike rate 181.58. The innings was supported by five 4s and five 6s.

In the first innings of the match, when RCB was the fielding team, Virat dropped a catch of SRH batter Aniket Verma, who scored 43 off 18. The former skipper dropped a catch of Verma, which took everyone by surprise, as Kohli has one of the most safe pair of hands across the globe. The catch drop could prove costly, but the batting line-up of the IPL 2025 winning team was good enough to surpass every hurdle in the match. Jacob Duffy, the New Zealand international pacer, who made his IPL debut tonight for RCB, was named Man of the Match for the bowling figure of 3/22 (4).

Adani Defence delivers first batch of 2,000 LMGs to Army ahead of schedule

Adani Defence delivers first batch of 2,000 LMGs to Army ahead of schedule

NEW DELHI: To provide lethal punch to the Indian Army‘s firepower, Indian defence major Adani Defence & Aerospace on Saturday delivered the first batch of 2,000 ‘Prahar’ light machine guns (LMGs) manufactured under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The delivery of the first batch of the 7.62 mm-calibre weapon, manufactured at the company’s small arms complex on the outskirts of Gwalior, was completed in seven months well ahead of the contracted schedule. The company spokesperson said the total order for the LMGs stands at around 40,000.The LMG weighs 8 kg and is 1,100 mm long and it has an effective range of 1,000 m, according to the company’s data. Prahar has a rate of fire of 600–750 rounds per minute.During the truck flagging-off ceremony, Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO of Adani Defence & Aerospace, told the media, “The journey that has begun today took us six years, starting from bid submission, and we have delivered the first batch, 11 months ahead of schedule. The original timeline which was given to us by the customer has been seven years plus, but I can assure you that in the next three years the full order will be delivered.”Each weapon has undergone lifecycle testing, ballistic assessment and environmental trials before deployment, ensuring adherence to the operational and reliability standards required by the Indian armed forces, a company statement said. The flagging-off ceremony on the premises of the Gwalior facility on Saturday was attended by A Anbarasu, DG acquisition, defence ministry. Anbarasu lauded the company for saving several months by delivering ahead of schedule, and said it shows there is the ability to “race and fire” against time in turning contracts into deliveries. He said the govt stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its defence industry partners, asserting that “scale” and “speed” are the twin pillars of defence acquisition that guide the entire procurement process. Anbarasu stressed that the govt and the private sector have to be together in the nation’s journey towards achieving Atmanirbharta in defence. The Indian Army uses LMGs, such as Prahar and Negev NG-7, to strengthen its firepower along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border with Pakistan by providing high-volume, long-range fire (up to 1,000m) to secure bunkers, provide defensive fire and counter infiltration attempts.Designed for scale, the Gwalior facility has an annual production capacity of up to 1 lakh weapons, with more than 90% domestic sourcing. The facility is contributing to a broader industrial ecosystem in MP by generating skilled employment and supporting MSMEs across the supply chain. The Gwalior unit is also geared to manufacture close quarter battle (CQB) weapons for the armed forces, further expanding India’s indigenous small arms capability. The manufacturing capability is also supported by Adani Defence’s ammunition complex in Kanpur, commissioned in 2024.

‘Sharm nahi aati tumko’: Bengaluru professor who called student ‘terrorist’ 13 times suspended | Bengaluru News

'Sharm nahi aati tumko': Bengaluru professor who called student 'terrorist' 13 times suspended

BENGALURU: A video of a PES University faculty member insulting a student from a minority community has gone viral. The university suspended the professor, who later issued a written apology “for not upholding classroom decorum”. According to a social media post, the professor called the student “terrorist” 13 times in a fit of rage. “While the class is on, you come and disturb everyone. Sharm nahi aati tumko (aren’t you ashamed)? Useless fellow, terrorist. Yes, I’ll call you a ‘terrorist’,” the professor is heard shouting in the viral video clip. There is still no clarity on what triggered the act, and no police complaint has been filed by either the student concerned or the university. Police, though, have registered a suo motu criminal case against the professor. Muralidhar Deshpande, an adjunct faculty member with the Bengaluru-based private university, was teaching supply chain analytics to the BBA second year class on March 24 when the incident happened. While some university sources said he was annoyed after a student repeatedly sought permission to leave the classroom, others said he lost his temper over a noisy class. The student reported the incident to the department chairperson the same day, who visited the classroom and asked the professor what had happened. When the professor continued to behave inappropriately, the chairperson told him to leave midway through a lecture, sources said. As the video went viral, the university suspended him. Jawahar Doreswamy, chancellor, PES University, said the varsity authorities were still verifying the authenticity of the video. “This is unacceptable. The faculty holds a PhD. We don’t want to suppress anything. We will take necessary action,” the chancellor said. “All our lectures are recorded. We have asked our technical team to check authenticity of the video. We are trying to get to the truth. Meanwhile, we have kept the lecturer under suspension. Disciplinary committee will check evidence before initiating further action against him,” Doreswamy said. “All our faculty members are trained on how to deal with situations in classrooms. At times, there can be disciplinary issues and people can overreact. We are looking at our protocol on what briefings were given to adjunct faculty members,” he added. “I would like to clarify that the word used was not directed at any [specific] student, but I understand and acknowledge that it was inappropriate,” the lecturer said in his apology. Police told TOI they approached college authorities and students, asking them to file a complaint for them to initiate legal action against the lecturer. “The university management, though, told us to wait for a while,” a senior police officer said. Girinagar police have registered a suo motu criminal case against the professor under various provisions of BNS, including Section 299, which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments. A senior officer from Girinagar police station said a notice will soon be issued to the professor as part of investigation.

Virat Kohli spills truth: ‘I’ve always risked burnout, not being undercooked’ after RCB win | Cricket News

Virat Kohli spills truth: 'I’ve always risked burnout, not being undercooked' after RCB win

Virat Kohli once again showed why he is the heartbeat of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, steering his side to a dominant six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 season opener on Saturday. The former India captain hit an unbeaten 38-ball 69 as RCB chased down 202 in just 15.4 overs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Reflecting on his performance, Kohli said, “It’s good to get back out there. The last T20 game I played was the final last year, but the way I batted in the recent one-day series really helped me stay in that momentum. I wasn’t playing shots that I don’t usually play… these breaks help me mentally. I stay fresh, I stay excited. Whenever I come back to play, it’s 120%.” The chase was powered by a brilliant 26-ball 61 from impact substitute Devdutt Padikkal. Kohli lauded his young partner’s performance: “Outstanding knock. Right from the word go, I had plans of going aggressive in the powerplay. But when I saw him play, I was like, just keep putting him back on strike. He completely took the game away from the opposition. I even told him, that shot he hit off the slower ball over mid-on for six… just keep going. He’s hitting the ball amazingly well.” Kohli also emphasised the importance of team contribution over individual records: “As a player, you don’t want to just hold on to a spot; you want to keep performing and keep putting in the work for the team.” RCB’s chase was anchored by Kohli and Padikkal’s 101-run stand for the second wicket, after the team lost opener Phil Salt early. Kohli’s innings included five fours and five sixes, with some trademark shots like the straight six that hit the sight screen, and a swat flick executed with minimal movement, demonstrating his mastery of timing and placement. Earlier, SRH had posted 201/9, with stand-in captain Ishan Kishan top-scoring with 80 off 38 balls, including eight fours and five sixes. Jacob Duffy, on IPL debut, impressed with figures of 3/22, dismantling SRH’s top order. Phil Salt also took a stunning one-handed catch in the deep to dismiss Kishan. Kohli, who now plays only 50-over cricket for India after retiring from Tests and T20Is, remains a key figure for RCB. “The kind of scheduling over the last 15 years meant there was always a risk of burnout. These breaks help me mentally… as long as you’re physically fit and mentally excited, both things come together nicely, then you’re able to contribute to the team’s cause,” he added. With this victory, RCB began their IPL 2026 campaign in style, honouring the 11 fans who tragically lost their lives at last year’s title parade with black armbands, empty seats, and a minute’s silence before the game.

NZ-W vs SA-W Match Preview:

The transition from the shortest format to the 50-over arena begins as New Zealand Women host South Africa Women at the iconic Hagley Oval in Christchurch. This series opener is scheduled for Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 6:30 AM IST. Following their clinical 4-1 triumph in the T20I series, the “White Ferns” enter this ICC Women’s Championship fixture as the favorites, while the Proteas look to recalibrate their strategy and secure vital qualification points on tour.

New Zealand Women enter the 1st ODI with their squad operating at peak efficiency, led by the extraordinary form of captain Amelia Kerr. The star all-rounder recently dismantled the South African attack with a career-best 105 off 55 balls in the final T20I and claimed 2/6 with the ball. Furthermore, the veteran presence of Suzie Bates, who has amassed nearly 6,000 ODI runs, provides the necessary stability for the longer format. Additionally, the bowling unit features the clinical pace of Lea Tahuhu, who recently took 3/15, and the disciplined spin of Nensi Patel. Consequently, the team seeks to leverage their superior all-round depth to dictate the tempo of the 50-over contest.

However, South Africa Women arrive in Christchurch determined to overcome the absence of key veterans and find more consistency in their batting ranks. Captain Laura Wolvaardt remains the cornerstone of their lineup, boasting an elite ODI average and the ability to anchor long innings. Moreover, the squad can take heart from the performances of Ayabonga Khaka and Tumi Sekhukhune, who both claimed 3 wickets each in the final T20I despite the high-scoring nature of the game. Furthermore, the visitors intend to utilize the middle-order power of Chloe Tryon and the all-round skills of Nadine de Klerk to challenge the Kiwi bowlers. Furthermore, the Proteas look to improve their fielding standards and power-play execution to stay competitive across the full 100 overs.

Therefore, both legendary squads will fight with high intensity to claim the early advantage in this three-match series. New Zealand Women aim to utilize their winning rhythm and Amelia Kerr’s world-class form to secure a comfortable victory. Additionally, South Africa Women intend to leverage their pace-bowling strength and Wolvaardt’s technical expertise to stage a comeback and secure their first win of the 2026 tour.

Iran hits airbase in Saudi, allies Houthis enter war, target Israel

Iran hits airbase in Saudi, allies Houthis enter war, target Israel

Exactly a month since US and Israel attacked Iran, a fresh front appeared to have opened in the spiralling West Asia war as the Houthis, an Iranian-backed militant group in Yemen, launched a ballistic missile attack on Israel early Saturday. It was their first in this war, followed by a threat that the attacks would continue “until the aggression ends”. Israel said it intercepted the projectile. An Iranian strike, meanwhile, injured 12 US troops in Saudi Arabia, two of them seriously, in an attack on Prince Sultan airbase on Friday, two people briefed on the matter said. The combined missile and drone attack amounted to one of the most serious breaches of American air defences in the war. At least two KC-135 aerial refuelling planes also suffered significant damage.Iran also claimed to have struck two US Army “hideouts” in Dubai, Iranian state media Fars News Agency reported. According to the news agency, a military spokesperson claimed US army personnel had moved to these hideouts after Iran’s strikes on their bases in the region.

Iran hits airbase in Saudi, allies Houthis enter war, target Israel

Iran reports strike at Bushehr nuclear plant, third in 10 daysThe spokesperson claimed that more than 500 US Army personnel were in these hideouts. Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, said Saturday barrage of ballistic missiles was launched toward what he described as “sensitive Israeli military sites” in southern Israel. The attack came hours after Saree signalled in a vague statement Friday that the rebels would join the war.The situation at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant continues to deteriorate and attacks pose a direct threat to nuclear safety, the head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on Saturday after another strike near the facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency said on Friday that Iran had informed it of another strike in the vicinity of Bushehr, the third such incident in 10 days, with no damage to the operating reactor and no release of radiation reported.

Focus shifts to new strait

The Russian foreign ministry on Saturday called for “unequivocal and firm condemnation” of the attack near Bushehr. The Israeli military said Friday it had struck a heavy water reactor and a uranium processing plant in central Iran, but did not mention Bushehr. The plant in southwestern Iran has the country’s only operational nuclear power reactor and was first connected to the grid in 2011.The Saudi airbase attacked Friday, about 96km from the apital of Riyadh, was targeted twice earlier in the week. The base is run by the Royal Saudi Air Force but is also used by US troops. The number of Americans wounded in the Iran war has grown beyond 300, while 13 soldiers have been killed.Elsewhere in the region on Saturday, drones struck Kuwait International Airport, damaging its radar, and the key port of Salalah in Oman. The United Arab Emirates said its forces were intercepting drones and missiles from Iran. Saudi Arabia’s defence ministry said its forces had intercepted drones and a missile, without saying where they had come from. The Israeli military said Saturday that it had begun a new round of bombardment in the Iranian capital of Tehran. The Israeli military said Saturday it had struck an industrial complex in Tehran used for the research and development of naval weapons. Israel also reported more waves of incoming Iranian missiles, which killed at least one person in Tel Aviv. A direct strike on a village in central Israel wounded 11 people and left a massive crater.

Beyond khaki: Cops find their true colours on canvas | Mumbai News

It’s 3.30 in the afternoon when police inspector Mousami Subhash Patil answers the phone, her voice still heavy with sleep. “I had a night shift,” says the cyber cop, continuing the call anyway. Time, in her line of work, is rarely her own. And yet, she insists on carving some out.Late at night or in the quiet of early morning—when duty finally loosens its grip—Patil turns to her paintbrush. What began as a personal ritual has, over time, become a way to decompress from the intensity of high-stakes cases, including the 2022 Bulli Bai investigation. “Everyone needs a hobby outside of work,” she says, echoing the noted Marathi writer P L Deshpande. Until recently, few of her colleagues even knew about hers. They discovered it at the 10th edition of the Sahayog Contemporary Art Exhibition, inaugurated on March 27 at Kaladalan Art Gallery in Prabhadevi. Curated by artist Satyendra Rane, the show—conceived as a platform for emerging artists—brings together an unusual mix this year: established names alongside members of the police, civil services and legal fraternity.Organised in association with the Mumbai Police Welfare Association, the exhibition carries an added layer of purpose, with a portion of proceeds supporting police personnel. “Given the demanding nature of their service, it was important for us to acknowledge and support their contribution to society. This initiative allows art to directly contribute to their welfare,” says Rane. What struck him most, he adds, was the sincerity of expression. “It was inspiring to see how naturally they connected with art.”Among them is retired assistant commissioner of police-turned-advocate Shailendra Gaikwad, whose canvas captures the stillness of village life. Inspired by Chandamama comics as a child, Gaikwad returned to painting more seriously after retirement.”My daughter, Purva, is also an advocate. She too paints,” he says. Having sold two works at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Gaikwad hopes for a similar response at this show. “I’ve been told I need more practice,” says the 65-year-old, “but it brings me joy.”That sense of unfiltered expression lies at the heart of Sahayog. “Here, an artist is not defined by training or profession but by the ability to connect through creativity,” says Rane. “Art is not just about aesthetics but about empathy, and impact.”Across the gallery, the works—ranging from abstract compositions to landscapes and mixed media—carry traces of discipline meeting imagination. “There have been days involving emotionally challenging cases,” Patil reflects. “Sitting down with a canvas has helped me process those emotions and regain balance free of distractions.” One of her recent works, ‘Spiral of Colourful Soul’, created on Gudi Padwa recently, draws from “vibrant emotions and inner thoughts,” while another one titled ‘The Golden Awakening’ too is shaped by instinct and lived experience. “There is something moving about seeing a police officer, an advocate, or a civil servant express themselves on canvas,” says Rane. “It reminds us that beyond our roles, we are all simply human.”(The 10th Sahayog Contemporary Art Exhbition will be on at the Kaladalan Art Gallery in Prabhadevi till April 2)
